Uruguay vs Paraguay

Venue: Antonio Vespucio Liberti

Without doubt the best small football country in the world, Uruguay has a population size roughly equitable to Wales and one-third of Belgium. It has produced some of the world’s top players. From the wizard-like Enzo Francescoli to passport thief Alvaro Recoba and the buccaneering Luis Suarez, who has just fired his country into the Copa America final.

Uruguay’s success is nothing short of outstanding. Two Gold Medals, two World Cups and 14 Copa America titles. It will be 15, a record, if they beat Paraguay. Their exemplary recent record: six finals and three victories since 1983, serves to remind us that South America’s footballing pedigree is not confined to Uruguay’s two huge neighbours, Brazil and Argentina.

They face a Paraguay side yet to win a match in normal time at this year’s tournament. Five draws, three without a goal, and two penalty shoot-out victories mean they will join Uruguay on Sunday at El Monumental, Buenos Aries.

On the last occasion the people of Paraguay could look forward to a Copa America final, Margaret Thatcher hadn’t even started to eye up a small island 1,000 miles south of Sunday’s final. They won then, in 1979, to claim their second trophy.

The men from Montevideo, meanwhile, can boast a current crop of players to match their illustrious history. The squad that narrowly missed out on a final place at last year’s World Cup contains a good deal of quality and experience. Two players in their thirties called Diego; Lugano, captain and defensive rock, and Forlan, all-time top scorer, provide a strong core to a team that features the exciting talents of Lazio winger Alvaro Gonzalez and the talismanic Liverpool striker Suarez.

This is also a side without the injured Edinson Cavani, who scored 33 goals for Napoli last term, and a side where highly-rated young midfielders Nicolas Lodeiro and Cristian Rodriguez have to settle for places on the substitute’s bench. In their place, the versatile Porto wide-man Alvaro Pereira is having another great tournament, scoring two goals.

By contrast, you may or may not recognise a handful of Paraguay players, such as Wigan’s Antolin Alcaraz and Sunderland’s phantom midfielder Cristian Riveros, who after scoring on the opening day of last season, has just been loaned out to Turkish side Kayserispor. Paraguay’s star man Roque Santa Cruz, another all-time top scorer, missed both the Quarter and Semi Final matches through injury. He will face a late fitness test, and is hoping to re-establish his reputation in Europe after a miserable few years contracted to Manchester City.

The bookmakers are giving odds of 11/5 on Paraguay winning their third title, and Paraguayans will be buoyed by a Quarter-Final appearance at the recent World Cup. But it will take something extra special to stop Uruguay's talented side making history.

Prediction: Uruguay 2 - 0 Paraguay
